RESURRECT
The SABE Degree Graduate Show, our design and education festival held at the end of each academic semester, is always about celebrating graduate student work across the three Units with series of invited talks from academicians, practitioners and alumni. This year, challenged by the recent pandemic, we embarked into virtual media and online platforms for all our final reviews on 21/5/2020.

“Living Off Grid”
Salak South New Village/Kampung Baru Salak Selatan established in 1952, is one of the three new villages within the Kuala Lumpur municipality. The so-called ‘New Village’ came into existence during the Emergency Period from 1948 to 1962. The British colonial government infiltrated the communist ideology in Malaya, and through the Briggs Plan, most of the Chinese were forced to move to the control area with strict controls imposed, including the establishment of fences to restrict village operations, food control and so on. In order to reduce government spending, the scheme allowed residents of new villages to engage in farming within the new village and to allow small businesses and even small industries to achieve self-sufficiency. Since the opening in 1962, with limited government resource subsidies, the villagers in the new villages have obtained resources from the surrounding environment and then developed a unique new village culture. Fast forward to today’s age, a proposal of permaculture is to encourage the locals to be resourceful and self-reliant and it’s an ecological design system to bring back the nostalgia of their history, culture and memories to the community. Huey Mun was also shortlisted as a finalist in the 2020 ARCASIA student competition.

“Village Prototypes”
This project focuses on the role of architecture in breaking through the periphery between Salak South New Village and City by supporting community engagement and providing a sustainable New Village prototype in urban scale. A new linkage between Salak South New Village to existing public transportation would introduce a group of new dwellers. The concept of the 'Building in the Park', is where activities constantly mediate the boundary of landscape and building. Building spaces are carefully curated giving a whole new experience of a village or city dwellers.

“Digital Acceleration Episode”
As another episode of the landscape of discontinuity, the DAE by DXC TECHNOLOGY is a facility that focuses on the research and development of everything digital leveraging on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, blockchain, humanoid robotics and mega-data facilities. With the loss of Bukit Mertajam, Penang’s old town transient community due to the relocation of its local train station, the approach to this project is to strategically infused drastic programmatic intervention to re-purpose the derelicts and abandonments with a timeless layer relevant to the targeted missing social fabric.

“Requiem for us”
Degressive rural towns either covered by un-tended bushes and wild flowers, or later, the imbalance age gap and dying history that has engraved onto the layers of time of each different local family, will soon be buried through abandoned memories and piles of unwanted faces. The project site is at TANJUNG TUALANG, once a tin mine full of sweat and tears, now a land full of scars, water pits and a lonely Tin Dredge. The building has a distinctive layout with explicit bone structure, but in the layout the columns which are implicitly for consolation purposes, spans from entrance corridor, middle hall, little chapel till the resomation chamber, along with the roofs which are exposed to the sky for the families, and where the pendulum will swing inside the bell. Thinking of architecture, we shouldn’t be satisfied with the mortal coil that bears on us. Death, shouldn’t be our anchor, nor should architecture. Instead, it should be a method of thinking. What restricts us on the ground can be shaken off, a propaganda for families of the deceased, till death do us apart and till we meet again.
